Since 2015 I portrayed women who for a variety of reasons, are living in exile in Berlin. But wherever these women come from and whatever they have gone through they had the courage to take their lives into their own hands to build a new future for themselves and their children. I direct our gaze not to our different backgrounds but to the common future we share. All photographs are accompanied by texts in which these women speak for themselves. It was important to me right from the beginning that the women actively participated in the project that they could speak in their own words and about the subjects closest to their hearts

I would like to speak about my feelings, which are universal and can be understood by anyone. It does not depend on my face, or my nationality, or my religion or my skin colour.
Everyone can understand my feeling, my sadness at the fact that I can't return to my homeland.

It’s all about forgiveness. I don’t want any mother to lose her son anymore, no sister to lose her brother, no daughter to lose her father and no wife to lose her husband. Only if we forgive each other we’ll be able to reconcile with each other and rebuild our country.

My baby is few months old now; she gurgles and squeals, to explore her voice. One day those gurgles will turn into words, and with those words she will raise questions about Syria. In the ideal times it's not easy to answer the children favorite question: Why? Not to mention words like revolution, war and exile.

Germany is my home. On 2 February 2006 my family was deported from Germany to Lebanon. I lived here for 16 years. I spent my childhood and my youth here, though we never had a residence permit. Last year, I returned with my husband and my three children, I returned to my home.

Whatever happens, I’m able to take my life into my own hands. Here in Germany, I take part in an EAF program that supports women in their political work. I’m especially interested to help women strengthen their rights. I know my country needs me. That’s why I want to go back as soon as possible and help rebuilding it.

It is a source of meaning through an illusion of connection to a human cultural structure that one was born into and spent many influential years in. It can also be a burden because of recent history and not so recent history. It's at times being a part of a controversy that one never decided to be a part of. It's sometimes needing to make excuses for things you had no part in. It's baggage.

Faszinierenderweise haben alle immer sehr positiv auf mein "Deutschsein" reagiert und es weniger mit dem 2.Weltkrieg in Verbindung gebracht, sondern eher mit netten Menschen, die sie beim Reisen kennengelernt haben, tollen Autos und dem Qualitätssiegel "Made in Germany". Für mich ist Israel zur Heimat geworden.

If you are Jewish it's ok. But when you are an Arab you feel confused about who you are. When I get interviewed as a known actor they always ask me about my identity and my political view and not about my work. If I was Jewish they wouldn't ask me that. In Berlin, people don't care about it. Here they ask me about my work, my family, about love...my Christian-Arab background is only one of many interesting stories. That's why I'm happy my son is here. That he doesn't have to deal with his "complex" identity being half Arab half Jewish.

Aris Fioretos The sentence came to me about a third of the way into the text. I knew at once it would be the last one. It still stands at the end of the book on which I have been working for the past couple of years.
The distance to it has grown shorter. I can now make out the sentence ahead of me. What it means? The thirty white pages that still remain to be traversed will know.

as if she had dissolved into air, and I thought, she was right, I come back here
too often; yes, exactly: a little too often. Katja Petrowskaja The final chapter involves a return to the hometown, but you don’t know precisely if this return occurs in terms of language, relationships, or topography, and how real this return is. The encounter with the unknown older woman in fact took place on Institutskaja Street, as I stood in front of my birthplace again, in my hometown of Kiev. The woman told me that I came here too often, although I hadn’t been there for years. Did she know that I was writing a book about my origins? But reality has, in turn, overtaken us. Just as I finished the book, nearly 100 people were killed during the slaughter on that street in Kiev, and now I really know why I was there “too often.”

But there were no snipers, as there are for hands that reach out of the ghettos;
no dogs, as for hands that reach out from the cracks in boxcar floors;
no angels waiting, as they always do, for hands that reach out from chimneys into ash-clouded skies. Nathan Englander I worked on a story called The Tumblers for years and years, drafting and redrafting, again and again. I worked on it so intensely for so long, that I couldn’t see it straight anymore when beginning at the beginning and writing toward the end. Then I had the idea of writing it backwards. I began drafting at the end of the story, and, bit by bit, worked my way to the front, which gave me the distance I needed to see it clearly again. So it’s the one story I wrote where the first sentence turned into the last.

It will rain today. Habila Helon This is the last sentence to my second novel Measuring Time. It is a rather dark novel and I wanted to end it on a positive note, but not gratuitously so. There has been a drought in the small town of Keti; as a reflection of this drought the main character, Mamo, has gone through a harrowing time: there are deaths in the family, his lover is losing her mind. The sentence shows Mamo’s determination to put the worst behind; an act of will. And so whether it rains or not is not important, what is important is that he is determined to move on, to welcome life.

I stood in that small room and wept into the desert of my palms. lê thi diem thúy Palm is one of my favorite chapters. It was the most difficult chapter for me to write. The last sentence came to me first. I didn't know what it meant, or who was speaking it, or where - in the narrative arc - the sentence was coming from. When that chapter finally came together - after many, many drafts, and one attempt to toss it out entirely - I felt spent, and so grateful.

In one American paperback edition, this final non-sentence was somehow, accidentally, left out, so that the book ends with an actual sentence. When I see that final page, I think, "But it's incomplete. Because it's complete." Any complete book is incomplete.
